Sustainability in Grease
Dr. Piet Lugt, Senior Scientist, SKF Research and Technology Development
Piet Lugt studied mechanical engineering and tribology at the University of Twente in The Netherlands (MSc. 1988, PhD. 1992).He worked at the Technical University of Delft until 1995 when he joined SKF Research where he has fulfilled several positions in Tribology and Lubrication, presently as a Senior Scientist. He has been a part-time Professor at Luleå Technical University, Sweden, from 2005-2008 and is (part-time) full professor at the University of Twente since 2011 where he is presently the scientific lead of the SKF University Technical Center for Grease Lubrication.
Piet has written the book “Grease Lubrication in Rolling Bearings” and received the NLGI Clarence E. Earle Memorial Award in 2021.
Dr. Ryan Evans, Director of Research and Development, The Timken Company
Ryan D. Evans is the Director of Research and Development at The Timken Company, currently responsible for leading teams that identify and develop new product, materials, and manufacturing technologies to meet customer needs. He joined Timken in 2002 as a research engineer in the field of advanced materials and made significant contributions in the areas of thin film coatings, lubrication, advanced materials characterization, and tribology within the R&D division. He authored over 40 refereed technical publications and has 14 patents in these fields. He held several management positions in R&D, including the role of Manager of Engineering Fundamentals and Physical Testing. During that time, he had responsibility for Timken’s bearing and gear fundamentals, tribology, advanced modeling and simulation, and bearing product performance testing.
Dr. Evans transitioned to the Manufacturing Continuous Improvement group as a program manager within Timken’s Operations division in 2015, followed by assignments in Supply Chain Management for Aftermarket and Aerospace business segments before returning to R&D in his current role as Director in 2018. While most of Timken R&D’s significant accomplishments are proprietary, the team was recognized externally with a prestigious R&D 100 award in 2021 and an ASM International Engineering Materials Achievement Award in 2017. Ryan holds a B.S. from The University of Akron and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Case Western Reserve University, all in chemical engineering. He is the President of the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE) for 2022-2023 and has won several STLE publishing awards. In addition to STLE, he is a member of the ASM International and ASME organizations.
Andreas Dodos, Chief Technology Officer, ELDON’s S.A.
Andreas Dodos, CLGS, received a Masters degree in Chemical Engineering and Environmental Technology from the University of Manchester, UK. He has spent the last 18 years at Eldon’s SA, with duties mainly focused on industrial and marine lubricants development. Since 2007 he has been actively involved in product stewardship with focus on global regulatory developments. He is a member in a number of professional bodies such as the ELGI, the Hellenic Maintenance Society and National Tribology Centre. Since 2010 he has been the Chairman of the European REACH Grease Thickener Consortium and he is currently serving on the ELGI Board of Directors. Andreas has extensive experience in formulation and application of lubricating grease and since 2018 he is CLGS certified by the NLGI – Certified Lubricating Grease Specialist.
