H. F. Webster Engineering Services (HFW), located in Rapid City, South Dakota, specializes in R&D leading to advanced materials and process technologies for use in the DOD and commercial markets. HFW’s mission is to develop and commercialize many of the great technologies being developed in partner universities like South Dakota Mines. Examples include the development of Friction Stir Welding technologies for several large DOD applications, Cold Spray deposition technologies which created sister company VRC Metal Systems LLC, as well as one of the latest sister companies Novum Nano.
Novum Nano is a company whose core mission is the research, development, and commercialization of nano-materials technology, focusing heavily on the incorporation of the correct type and ratio of nanoparticles into oils, greases, and paints to alter many of the critical properties of these materials. Through several funded research efforts Novum Nano has demonstrated engine oils and greases with improved lubricity and reduced wear, greases with increased thermal conductivity, and paints with increased static dissipation and lightning strike resistance. These developments have not only been focused on ground vehicle applications, but aerospace and maritime applications as well.
Novum Nano is not a traditional oil, grease, or paint producer, but rather specializes in the synthesis and selection of the best nano-particles and combinations of nanoparticles to achieve the desired interaction between particles and the molecules of the grease oil or paint. Once selected or synthesized, Novum-Nano works with industry leading products for the target applications or industries to incorporate nano-technology and advance the state of the art in performance. Novum-Nano’s goal is to partner with key players in the chemical processing space to scale and commercialize many of the technologies that have already been, or are in the process of being developed.
Van Horn, Metz & Company was incorporated in 1950 as a result of a partnership between Harold Van Horn and Donald Metz, both of whom had worked closely in Government paint formulation during War World II. This provided the foundations upon which Van Horn, Metz has grown to become one of the leading distributors in North America.
